Six Times Encryption Made It to the Movies

In addition to “Sneakers,” I also really liked “The Net,” which also was ahead of it’s time (although not by much). What was really cool is that the main character, a computer programmer played by Sandra Bullock, keeps a file of virus’ that she has cleaned from her clients computers. It is one of the first movies depicting true identity theft all the way down to having someone wipe out your real identity and replace it with someone else’s. Don’t let the 5 star review steer you away from this little gem, the people who rated that movie were probably the Sandra Bullock fan club, not true tech fans.

From IMDB:

The Net (1995)

A computer programmer stumbles upon a conspiracy, putting her life and the lives of those around her in great danger.

Director: Irwin Winkler

Writers: John Brancato, Michael Ferris

Stars: Sandra Bullock, Jeremy Northam, Dennis Miller
