The Ten-year-old Annemarie is the protagonist of the story. However, in Number the Stars, the typical immature girl in many ways, needs to deal with the normal difficulties as a grown-up, such as understanding the way the adult world work and getting along with her sibling. All these difficulties have resulted in the frightening context of war. In a sense, Annemarie has become a thoughtful and introspective girl. She learns to observe the complicated world around her. Because of the death of her older sister Lise realized that it is her time to deal with reality and understand the vulnerability of her parents. From the vivid description of Annemarie, I can consider how cruel it is for a naïve child to sacrifice her childhood and innocence in return of entering into the world of adulthood and responsibility. I consider Ellen Rosen of a round character because her Jewish background affects her thought and action. Ellen has gradually become more and more fearful when she knows the danger appending. She relies greatly on Annemarie for friendship, advice, and moral support. However, as the story goes on, faced with different kinds of situations. Ellen presents bravery and the ability to agree to all the difficulties.
