Everything we know about the Galaxy Note 5
Samsung’s new Note 5 is less than a month from its reported date of unveiling, August 13, so I figured I’d take the time to piece together the rumors about Samsung’s best of 2015.
- The display is a 5.7 inch QHD unit, the same size and resolution as last year’s Note 5, though rumors of either a 5.89 inch QHD unit, as well as a 4K display, have been floating around. The 5.7 inch QHD seems most likely though.
- The chipset is an improved version of the Exynos 7420 inside the Galaxy S6, named the Exynos 7422, which will have CPU, GPU, RAM and modems inside a single chip. A Geekbench 3 benchmark has reported the chip to be the 7420, though it could just be because the two are so similar they’ve been mistaken.
- 4GB of RAM will be in the device, which all leaks so far have reported exactly the same thing, so this one’s definite.
- The battery will be a 4100 mAh unit, which is massive (for comparison the unit inside the Note 4 and the Nexus 6 is 3220 mAh, the iPhone 6 Plus has a 2915 mAh unit, while the first Note had a puny 2500 mAh), however it will be sealed into the device. microSD expansion will likely be present though.
- The cameras are very similar to the S6 as well, 16 and 5 megapixels. They’re already excellent cameras, so Samsung’s decision to stick with them is justifiable. Whatever improvements do arrive are likely to be software-based.
- The S Pen is a source of controversy with this year’s Note. Renders are showing an enclosed S Pen that looks like it will need a spring-based eject mechanism, however reports are stating otherwise. The pen itself will not get any major overhauls in design, although functionality remains to be seen.
- There are rumors floating that the new Note could be one of the first phones to market (almost certainly the first one from a major manufacturer) to use the new USB-C standard.
- There will be no Note Edge this year, however Samsung will be releasing an S6 Edge+ sometime this year, which will come with a 5.5 or 5.7 inch QHD display, a high-end processor (either a Snapdragon 808 or Exynos 7420) and a 3000 mAh cell, with a slightly more squared off look that the standard S6 Edge.
- Rumors are pointing to either an August 12 or 13 unveiling, with release planned for August 21, to get a running start on Apple’s iPhone 6S Plus.
