Obesity or it’s Problems, What’s Bigger?

Obesity is a big problem in America, no pun intended. Obesity can have major effects on someone’s life. More than one-third of American adults are obese and nearly eighteen percent of children in America are obese. This is a large portion of Americans who are obese which can lead to other problems, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, certain cancers and other chronic conditions. An average adult is considered overweight when their BMI is between 25 and 29.9 and is considered obese when their BMI is over 30.

More than one-third of American adults are obese and nearly eighteen percent of children in America are obese.

The amount of adults who are overweight or obese are higher in the states that are either in the Midwest or south. Minnesota is ranked thirty-sixth highest obesity rate in the United States with 26.7 percent of the adult population being overweight or obese in 2014 according to The State of Obesity; 16.2 percent between the ages of 18 and 25, 26.7 percent between the ages 26 and 44, 32.2 percent between the ages 45 and 64 and 28.5 percent being 65 or older. This is a significant amount of Minnesotans but only a fraction of the United States as a whole country; many states are exceeding 30 percent and some are even rising above 35 percent. These numbers have been rising from the past and will keep rising until there’s change which is why people need to be informed on this topic and this large amount of people who are at unhealthy weights. The amount of adults that are obese or overweight also differs based on gender; 27.8 percent of males and 23.7 percent of females are overweight or obese in Minnesota according to a study done by The State of Obesity in 2012. The amount of adults that are overweight or obese also differs based on their race; 31.7 percent are Latinos, 31.2 percent are black and 26.1 percent are white based on a study done by The State of Obesity in 2014. These studies show that obesity is a large problem affecting many people in the United States and many things can cause it to differ.

This problem needs to be fixed or at least have a step in the direction of being fixed soon or else the percentage of adult Americans who are overweight or obese is going to keep rising. If this problem isn’t fixed then it could then lead to the decline of health and wellness in the United States.
