Babyboomers, Millenials and Gen Z

This morning, while I was on a discussion session with some of my coworkers. I remembered about an illustration that I found on the internet long time ago (I tried to find it, but I can’t). We were talking about the Babyboomers and Millenials by the way.

Here is the illustration, our parents, the babyboomers, saved 5 dollars by walking to work for 20 minutes. While us, the millenials, saved 20 minutes, by spending 5 dollars for the train to work. Both of this is true, it’s not about being right or wrong. It’s called perspective, both have their own reason.

But then, later tonight. I realized the illustration has changed now, there’s the Generation Z. According to the definition, they were born in 1995-today. They are the tech savvy generation, born with gadgets and their internet.

And where does the Gen Z fit in the illustration? Gen Z is always about crowdsourcing, see Uber and Airbnb. How they disrupted the business model of the current traditional taxi and hotel business by crowdsourcing.

“Gen Z don’t take train, and yet they don’t drive, they called for Uber.”

This is an era, where everyone doesn’t have the time, doesn’t have the capital to do all things by themself. That’s why to solve the problems, they crowdsource. Then the new illustration should be like this :

Babyboomers, saved 5 dollars by walking to work for 20 minutes. Millenials, saved 20 minutes, by spending 5 dollars for the train to work. Gen Z saved 5 dollars and 20 minutes by the helps of others, and this is crowdsourcing.

Some of us may think crowdsourcing as something terrifying, because of the old mindset, when you can do the job all by yourself, why let others take that (read: steal) job from you. While the Gen Z are embracing it like a help from the mother nature. And maybe, that’s the reason why they can grow faster than weed by cutting the unnecessary, useless, energy and time consuming process.

I am not saying this is the best way for every problem in the market, but the thing is. We can’t keep blaming the situation got worse than before, the economy is moving slower than ever, the competitor got better and better than us. We are old dogs learning about new trick. Change your old mindset and keep moving forward

update :

I found this new ad from Audi and Airbnb, this is the example of next level crowdsourcing, or simply a collaboration between 2 brands with no red string, a luxury car with a platform.
