I don’t know Nick but hope he finds love.

Wither Hills area in Marlborough with vineyards as far you can see

Backstreet’s back alright. Since we had to endure the tooth-pulling promotion of a new Las Vegas reunion show for a boy band, I thought it would be nice to look back at some of the finer wine pairing moment’s in BSB’s (yeah, I know the lingo) music video history.

…Turns out there’s not much….

If you find a scene where a Backstreet Boy is actually drinking wine, let me know because I came up dry. Probably an intentional decision as the core audience at the time was <21. Regardless, I re-watched some videos and was able to spot one thing. Howie D likes drinks!

Rock yo glassware right

What do singing vampires drink…Port? Not sure what’s in the steel carafe, but the only time I’ve imbibed wine out of a non-clear glass was for a blind wine tasting. So, maybe that’s what this is — a post coffin nap tasting at midnight.

Showing the meaning of being lonely

What does a turtle neck wearing pop-star drink at a soda fountain? Easy, whatever the 80 year old man still working pours you. You both don’t belong there. Howie, most gentlemen do not go to a soda fountain when they are lonely. That’s a quick way to feel even worse.

Happy Howie is back and he is most certainly drinking a mimosa! Side note: A mimosa is the #1 ordered wine cocktail at restaurants and bars, #2 is sangria.

Backstreet Boys, we will never forget your songs but we may attempt to dis-remember the day you showed up on the 21st season of The Bachelor.

Pairing episode 4 with a Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough, New Zealand.

You may be familiar with this grape, but New Zealand has made it their own.

Our beloved Corinne is the theme of our pairing this week because:
1) I don’t know how much longer she’ll be receiving roses and I would be bummed if I missed the opportunity to acknowledge her presence on this show.
2) Corinne and Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand are the perfect pairing because of a few noticeable similarities.

had to do it

Reason 1: Wine and Bachelor experts have both used the following terms to describe our subjects; exuberant, intense, forceful, bold, explosive, racy.

I love how The Wine Folly describes the pungent flavors coming from Marlborough as the new benchmark for Sauvignon Blanc.

Think vibrant tropical fruits with tingling acidity. Wines have intense aromatics of passion fruit, gooseberry, along with grassy-lemongrass flavors.

The moderate temperatures of Marlborough enable the grapes to fully ripen and develop acidity to create a zippy, citrus delight.

Great (and delicious!) visual from beyondpbr

Reason 2: There are no surprises anymore with Corinne, just like how NZ sauv blanc can be regularly consistent across all producers.

Simply put, we know what to expect with both. Corinne has made her approach to the Bachelor very clear and predictable. Likewise, a majority of wines in Marlborough are *machine harvested, stored in stainless steel tanks, and have very similar aromas and flavors.

These wines are fun, but generally lack the staying power and therefore don’t typically rise to great acclaim. But you never know, maybe Corinne has some surprises up her sleeve?

*It’s not eating the vines, only shaking them

Wine producers in Marlborough make excellent Sauvignon Blanc and Corinne sure makes for some entertaining Bachelor episodes. A true match. I wish the best of luck to both of their ‘multi-million dollar’ companies. :)

OPTIONAL red wine pairing: If you’ve read this far and don’t like white wine then you deserve something just as intense! Go for the second most produced grape in New Zealand, Pinot Noir. This typically fickle red grape has a new home in NZ. Howie D even had Pinot Noir as gifts at his wedding, so of course we had to honor that as well. That man loves drinks.

That’s all for now — Cheers and happy Bachelor-ing!
