About.
The majority of the plot takes place in Paris, France, while there are also a few sequences that are set in London, England, and Rosslyn Chapel, Scotland. The novel’s time period is current, as seen by its 2003 release. As a result, the novel takes place in the early 21st century and makes parallels to current affairs, including the building of Opus Dei’s New York headquarters and the highly publicized indictment of Opus Dei member and FBI agent Robert Hanssen. But the book also explores a number of historical eras, such as the Merovingian monarchy, the Templar Knights, and the time of Leonardo da Vinci.

The suspense novel The Da Vinci Code follows cryptologist Sophie Neveu and Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon as they look into the death of Jacques Saunière, Sophie’s grandfather and the curator of the Louvre. A member of the secret society known as the Priory of Sion, Saunière and his fellow members swore to keep the whereabouts of the Holy Grail a secret. It was Silas, a monk from the Catholic sect Opus Dei, who executed Saunière. Before she passed away, Saunière left Langdon and Sophie with a trail of hints and codes that let them figure out the truth about the Grail, Christianity’s past, and their own identities.

Each of the 105 chapters in the book contains a little scenario that moves the plot along. The chapters are divided into seven sections, each of which represents a distinct location or quest stage. Below is a quick synopsis of every section:

Prologue — Chapter 6: Saunière’s murder in the Louvre marks the start of the book. When the French police call Langdon to assist in interpreting the cues left by the curator, he quickly finds himself under suspicion. When Sophie shows along, she assists him in getting away and reveals that the clues are intended for her — she is Saunière’s granddaughter.

Chapters 7–14: Langdon and Sophie visit the bank where Saunière left a safe deposit box with a cryptex — a cylindrical object that requires the right password to access. Police officers and Silas, who has been given instructions to locate the cryptex by an enigmatic individual known only as the Teacher, are pursuing them. After escaping their assailants, they get in touch with British historian and Grail specialist Leigh Teabing, who offers to assist them.

Chapters 15–24: While deciphering the cryptex’s enigma, Langdon, Sophie, and Teabing take a private aircraft to England. Teabing indicates that Mary Magdalene, the mother of Jesus Christ’s child and his wife, is the Grail — rather than a cup. To keep this a secret and the Jesus bloodline intact, the Priory of Sion was established. Additionally, he asserts that the Catholic Church — particularly Opus Dei — has been working to stifle this information and eradicate the Jesus lineage.

Chapters 25–36: The trio arrives at Teabing’s estate, where they examine the cryptex and discover another clue that leads them to London’s Temple Church, the headquarters of the Knights Templar, a medieval order affiliated with the Priory of Sion. Silas, who had been following them, ambushes them there. Silas murders two of Teabing’s slaves and injures Teabing before being apprehended by Langdon and Sophie. They escape with the cryptex but are apprehended by police who were tipped off by Teabing, who is revealed to be the Teacher and the mastermind behind the entire operation. He had planned the deaths of Priory members and the hunt for the cryptex in order to obtain the Grail for himself.

Chapters 37–48: Langdon and Sophie are taken to Scotland Yard and questioned by Fache, a French police captain who has arrived from Paris. They escape thanks to the assistance of Sophie’s colleague, who is also a member of the Priory of Sion. They take a taxi to King’s College, where they come across Sir Isaac Newton’s tomb, which contains the second cryptex clue. When they open the cryptex, they discover a smaller one within, as well as a note from Saunière revealing that Sophie is a descendent of Jesus and Mary Magdalene, and that he is not her biological grandfather, but her protector.

Chapters 49–57: Langdon and Sophie visit Westminster Abbey and meet Teabing, who has kidnapped Silas and forced him to reveal the location of the final clue. Teabing threatens Silas and Sophie with death until Langdon hands him the cryptex. Langdon seems to comply, but then throws the cryptex into the air, shattering it on the ground. Teabing is apprehended by police, who were tipped off by Langdon’s acquaintance, who is also a Grail researcher. Silas passes away as a result of his injuries, and Langdon and Sophie are reunited with their friends.

Chapters 58–69: Langdon and Sophie fly to France, where they see the de Rochefoucauld family’s chateau, Sophie’s relatives, and the Grail’s guardians. They meet Sophie’s long-lost brother and grandmother, who greet them and explain the Priory of Sion’s history and mission. They then show them the Grail’s hidden hiding spot, which contains a collection of documents and artifacts proving the existence of Jesus’ and Mary Magdalene’s bloodline, as well as a portrait of Mary Magdalene created by Leonardo da Vinci, the original leader of the Priory of Sion.

Chapters 70–82: Langdon and Sophie leave the château and travel to Paris, where they separate ways. Sophie resolves to stay with her family and learn more about her heritage, while Langdon returns to his hotel. There, he recognizes that the final clue in the cryptex is an anagram of the phrase “The Holy Grail beneath the rose,” which relates to the Rose Line, a meridian that runs through Paris and indicates the original site of the prime meridian. He follows the Rose Line to the Louvre, where he discovers the inverted glass pyramid, a modern sculpture that serves as the Grail’s symbol. He kneels before it, paying reverence to the sacred feminine, the goddess whom the Grail represents.

Chapters 83–96: Langdon and Sophie meet at the Ritz Hotel and share a passionate moment. They agree to stay in touch and continue their investigation. Langdon offers Sophie a necklace with a fleur-de-lis pendant, the French royal family’s emblem and a symbol of her ancestry. Sophie expresses her gratitude and kisses him farewell.

Chapter 97–Epilogue: Langdon examines the Mona Lisa, another painting by Leonardo da Vinci that shows Mary Magdalene, when he returns to the Louvre. There’s a hint of a smirk on her lips, like she’s privy to something he’s only recently learned. Feeling a fresh sense of amazement and surprise, he smiles back and turns to leave.
