A response to the TED Article “How should we talk about mental health”

The language is definitely something to be questioned and discussed. We want everyone to achieve optimum mental, as well as all kinds of health. However, should these disorders be called diseases?- we don’t call heart disease heart disorder, and bipolar, schizophrenia, PTSD, and MDD are called disorders when they are technically diseases of the brain- not assigning weight to the severity of the ‘disorder’ doesn’t validate it for those suffering, and contributes to the stigma they feel and also contributes to underreporting when symptoms are present. Mental health is something we want everyone to achieve, just as we want everyone to achieve physical, emotional, heart, cardiovascular, etc. etc. health, but when we write about mental ‘disorders’ rather than a lack of health that is out of the ill person’s control we undermine the validation of the sick and also contribute to the misunderstanding of people who toss around phrases like “i’m feeling so bipolar today”.
