Review: For anyone that intends to read the Wheel of Time series, this book is a “must have”!!! Robert Jordan provides a glossary in the back of each book of the series, but this book provides very in-depth explanations and history of the locations in the WoT world. I’m up to book 6 (Lord of Chaos) of the series and am constantly referring to this book for expanded understanding of the people, places, and thing. And, this one includes maps!!! Love it!

Review: Ideally you should not buy this until you have completed the entire series of 15 books (14 + the prequel). The introduction does warn against spoilers but even taking this into account, while briefly scanning through the companion, I inadvertently noticed 2 spoilers; both things that had been hinted at, but spoilers I would have preferred to avoid nonetheless. So wait as long as you can to buy this and ideally after reading through the very last book if you want to be completely spoiler free.
Couple things that could have been better:
I would have liked it to include the pronunciations for the names of characters and names of places. I know there is some of that in the glossary of the books, but sometimes I am still a little unsure how to pronounce certain things and I think that should have been included. Another thing is I wish there were more pictures of characters, monsters and maybe some of the unique objects. The pictures they do have would have been much better with some color. In addition a few of the Aes Sedai look pretty darn similar, so a bit more variation would have been appreciated. Not sure if this is due to how the characters were written or the artists lack of detail but a few of them look too much alike for my taste.
Having said all that there is a ton to like about this companion. Very extensive and so many things are included. I initially did not think the Old Tongue dictionary was all that necessary but I find myself using it a lot to look up the meaning of words and it may in fact be one of the most useful parts of the companion.
I’m glad I got it at $17.79, at that price I would say it’s worth 5 stars. Currently the price has gone up to $22.99 and at that price I would say it’s about 4 to 4.5 stars.

Review: This is extremely comprehensive and a valuable resource to help remember who is who and what it what in this encyclopedic series. For example what is the True Power vs the True Source? How does the male and female halves of the True Source fuel the wheel of Time? It also contains comprehensive biographical information for all of the characters mentioned through out, which comprises hundreds of characters. The book will explain everything you need to know to understand and enjoy the Wheel of Time series.

Review: If you are a WoT superfan, you should feel free to get this book. It’s basically a glossary of the entire series, plus useful back story that never made its way into the books. It should be a good cheat sheet when you need it during rereads.
If you aren’t a superfan, this book is certainly not necessary for your understanding. (And if you’re on your first read, definitely don’t touch this: entries largely cover the entire series arc of their topic.)
Much of this book retreads what is actually in the books. But there are also a considerable number of fresh nuggets not previously known.
Some new information is of a more systematic nature. Entries on channelers usually give quantified measures of their strengths. (Albeit, with a measure of uncertainty — deriving as these measures are from sometimes-inconsistent authorial notes.) Aes Sedai entries tend to include year of birth and duration of time as novice and Accepted (presumably because Jordan had to nail these things down to write consistent with the Aes Sedai pecking order). The Old Tongue entry contains several pages of definitions and some discussion of language modifiers. There’s an entry completely devoted to Lini’s sayings.
Other new information appears incidental to the topic at hand. Cadsuane’s entry describes in detail every one of her hair ornaments, as well as the actual (brief) truth behind the legend of numerous rumors about her career. The entry on the Chair of Remorse reveals its true nature and purpose. And more beyond — I’ve spent at this point a few hours somewhat aimlessly flipping through to see what I find, and to follow up on topics with potential lingering questions that might be answered (and to answer questions I didn’t always know I had), and I’m sure I haven’t found all the fascinating details yet.
This book is not narrative. Aside from character entries, there is little storytelling in this. Presumably someone will carefully read this start to finish, but it’s hard for me to imagine doing it. (And I’ve invested enough time in the books to have read the series multiple times, spent hours on Internet forums, and flown to the final book’s release party in Provo.) Do not pick this up if you’re just looking for a good story to read.
“Companion” is almost certainly the more marketable name, but I think “Reference” would have been the better term. It probably isn’t something you’re going to get “friendly” with, the way the name “companion” likely implies.
This book is worth five stars if you like getting into details and lore of the entire Wheel of Time — as long as you’re aware that you’re getting a fairly clinical treatment of everything, in encyclopedic non-narrative form. If that’s not your thing, you will probably be disappointed.

Review: I’m giving this a 4 star instead if 3 because I think my expectations were off. That said, when I think of a companion book I tend to envision more maps, maybe a section with characters and important facts about them, and/or additional details about someone or something that adds greater context to the books.
What I like: although it’s set up in the format of a glossary it appears to be comprehensive. It checks in at over 800 pages and if you know who you want to look up it is easily done.
What I don’t like: the maps of the cities aren’t very detailed or helpful. There doesn’t seem to be anything as far as the path they travelled or of any battles or anything. There are a few pictures of characters but not much. The format of the book is transactional in that, if you want to know who X is you look him or her up. You probably won’t sit down and reread the book cover to cover.
On the whole, worth having but just not what I was expecting.
