The Excitement Never Ends

This is part of my experiment to write regularly and publish every day with the help of 365 Days of Writing Prompts. Today’s prompt: “Tell us about the last thing you got excited about — butterflies-in-the-stomach, giggling, can’t-wait excited.”

What was the last thing I got excited about? Not just excited, but butterflies-in-the-stomach, giggling, can’t-wait excited. I want to answer with technology: artificial intelligence, machine learning, augmented reality, virtual reality, etc. However, while I am really excited about all these topics, I cannot say that I am “butterflies-in-the-stomach, giggling, can’t-wait excited”. The thing about technology is that cool and exciting things happen all the time. Trust me, not getting butterflies in the stomach every time a buzzword comes out is a good thing. It is sort of like someone who does have butterflies in their stomach after speaking in front of people for a hundred times. In addition, I have written about technology quite often. In fact, I just did yesterday. So, this time, I am going to write about something else: 13 Reasons Why Season 2.

Yes, it seems stupid about getting so excited about a TV series, but this is no ordinary TV series for me. Before I saw Season 1, I had not followed a TV series for a long time. After watching Season 1, I was hooked. I wanted to find out what happened to the characters in the storyline. I wanted to find out if the justice, healing, etc. that I hope would happen indeed happened.

For a long time, Netflix only announced that Season 2 would come out. I read from the news that filming had started. Every time I walked around the campus (which is a popular place for filming), I pay more attention and looked around. I hoped that I would get lucky. Maybe I could even see the cast. Unfortunately, I saw the filming of another TV series, but not this one. It turned out that filming for this took place at another part of California.

In March, an invitation went out for 13 Reasons Why: Beyond the Reasons. It was a 30-minute-long mini-documentary, in which a live audience asked questions about the series and the cast, while the producer and other experts answered them. The audition looked for people to be in the audience. I signed up for it. I even wrote a detailed application. I never heard back from anyone though.

In April, fans were driving themselves crazy. Every day there were at least ten predictions about when the new season would come out. I was not the most nervous. I knew that editing that documentary would take time. It would not be released so soon. I was okay with waiting. Then Netflix dropped a bombshell: a teaser video that contained the release day: May 18. In an instant, everyone including me went extra crazy. In the weeks, more teaser pictures and videos trickled in. Every morning, I viewed everything I could found. I checked out the show’s subreddit on Reddit to catch up on leaks, teasers, speculations, predictions, etc. I made some predictions of my own too.

Looking back, is the season worth the excitement? I will leave it for another story. In the meantime, let me just say that I have learned one thing: getting super-excited about. I am not ready for getting so excited yet, so I am going to wait and see. At least Season 3 (which has been announced for the series) will not be here until next year. I can take my time to relax and decide if I want to be so excited next time.
