Great article! A couple of objections, though:
- there is no need to minimize Syria’s role in attacking Israel three times in a row. Syria wasn’t a bystander drawn into these wars, it was a motivated actor.
- Syria played a highly destructive role in Lebanon — another “original sin” that came to bite it back in the form of Hezbollah fighters.
But overall, I agree. There is a long history of events out of Syrians’ control that led to this point and a path out of the mess is hard to see. A way to help is also hard to find: if we intervene, we continue the long and shameful tradition of colonial powers messing with Syria. If we don’t, we just enable other players (Turkey, Iran, Russia) to continue that tradition. Syrian people will suffer regardless.
