When I started my first job out of college at IBM, during the first week my manager asked me whether I wanted to pursue a technical or managerial track. Being an engineer, I said I wanted to be an architect. That response would go on to shape the early part of my career at IBM. A colleague who started on the same day as me but was far less technical said he wanted to be a manager. I had left IBM to pursue greener pastures but later found out he became a manager.
Later in my career, I joined a startup that was started by three Chinese co-founders. In this company, there were many Asian engineers. However, there were zero Asian employees in Sales, Marketing and Services (at least during the early stages). Sometimes the bamboo ceiling is self-imposed and shaped by the culture and the status quo.
