Just the simple logic of knowing what your code actually does is very important. It reduced the load by 90%.
How I built an app with 500,000 users in 5 days on a $100 server
Erik Duindam

Same experience. I had a materialized view in Postgresql that took 20 minutes to complete. When I sat down and wrote some pure JavaScript code to compute the same query, I got it down to 20 milliseconds!!! Why? Because I knew how to use the JavaScript profiler and I knew how to debug JavaScript. Clearly I didn’t know Postgres well enough to do what I was doing.
