My advice to those starting out would be to plan on learning multiple languages and platforms, and to plan on doing that the rest of your career.
As the decades have gone by, I’ve found that the most valuable asset is having proficiency in a core language, but then being flexible to learn what your company needs you to learn: PHP for WordPress? Ok. Xamarin for our mobile apps? Ok. R for our data analysis? Ok (I think).
And if you do front end development, JavaScript, CSS, and HTML are going to only take you so far. You’ll find yourself exploring Angular, React, and a host of JavaScript frameworks that make life much easier than JavaScript alone.
