Review: I love this book. I have always thought Ayurveda was something sort of mystical and could only really be learned at your mother’s side in her kitchen, and so have always been intimidated by it. Although I have always wanted to learn, and have attended conferences, it was always out of reach. Until now. this book changed all that. It is written in easy to understand terms, and Kate O’Donnell makes it all seem like just common sense!

It has a good overview of Ayurveda if you want to learn some basics before cooking, but you can just jump in and try one of the recipes without going into the history or philosophy. And even if you just jump in, it is sprinkled with information throughout, so even as you read one recipe, you will still be learning.

The “everyday” recipes and charts are great. It is an easy way to plan how to eat — a basic chart of what to have (grain cereal for breakfast, chia pudding, etc), depending on the season, and then options to add in. Super simple — and the charts will help you to get some recipes down to memory.

I recommend trying the kitchari recipe first. It is a basic of ayurvedic healing, and it is easy to make. But before cooking, you will want to look at the recipe first, and start getting spices if you do not have (i.e. cumin seed, fenugreek seeds, coriander seeds, ghee, etc). It will seem like an investment in the spices, but you will be using them in all sorts of recipes, and they will go a long way once you have them. I live in a place where I cannot find them, so I had to order online (try Penzeys spices if you are concerned about ethics).

I recommend this book if you are new to Ayurveda and want to learn more — this is a great way to get there. If you are practicing, you might know all this, and already have these recipes. But she is such a great teacher, you would still like reading it!

I am giving this four instead of five stars because of the way this book was made. The pages in mine are already starting to fall out. I always lay my cookbooks out when cooking, sometimes put something heavy on one side to keep the book open, and none of them have had this problem. This book is extremely heavy, glossy, and the glue in the binding does not hold. The glossy pages are not good for jotting down notes — they always smear. For next editions, I would recommend they make it more lightweight — i like cookbooks that have softer, lighter feel, and make sure that it is bound in a way that the pages do not come loose.

But aside from the binding — highly recommend this book for anyone even thinking of delving into Ayurveda!

Title: Interesting recipes, but not truly Ayurvedic

Review: I am Ayurveda student of several years now. I deeply respect this Science and continue to study to understand it and live it on a daily basis.

I really wanted to like this book for there is some information that is correct, but unfortunately most of the recipes go against the Ayurvedic Principals taught to us by the various texts like Charaka Samhita, Ashtanga Hridayam and others.

For example, lets take the Every Day Recipes.
1. Everyday grain cereal.
Almond milk is quite heating and heavy, so not a good choice for every day. Winter is the best time for it.
Dried fruit is contraindicated in spring.
Everyday sweet spice mix have ginger (especially this one) and cinnamon which are not to be used in summer and especially fall when we want to avoid overheating our body.

2. Everyday chia pudding. Chia seeds are very slimy, very hydrating so are to be avoided in spring when we are looking to minimize those qualities in our food.

3. Everyday frittata.
It uses eggs which are heating and are very heavy. They are definitely not recommended to be used every day, or in spring due to heaviness and in fall due to being very heating. Almond milk mixed with eggs makes the dish more heating and heavier.

4. Everyday cream of anything soup. Again ginger is approved for all seasons, but Ayurvedic texts very clearly indicate that ginger is to be avoided in summer and especially in fall for we are looking to avoid overheating. Ginger is extremely heating.

5. Everyday bean pate.
Miso is fermented. Ayurveda cautions against all fermented foods unless those are freshly pickled. Very very few aged pickles are OK like lemon pickle and only in the right season — usually winter. Pickles are to be avoided especially in spring and fall for both sour and salty aggravate Kapha (increase phlegm) and Pitta (increase heat).

6. Morning beverage with lemons. Juice of 1/4 lemon for 1 and 1/4 cup of water is way too much lemon in one setting. It’s definitely a way to develop excess heat, burning and acid reflux in the body. Lemon is sour which should also be avoided in spring and in fall in excess. Especially if you have any kind of heat conditions (red skin, burning, migranes, burning acid reflux). Ayurvedic texts indicated that honey is never to be heated or consumed with hot liquids. Only pleasantly warm. It turns into Aam (autotoxins).

7. Everyday digestive lassi or Takra as it is called in sanskrit.
Takra is an amazing healing beverage but only if it is used correctly. First it is not to be used in spring at all for it provokes Kapha. It should not be used or very cautiously used in fall for it is already very heating (even without the spices). Ginger and turmeric in takra make it extremely heating and is not suitable for every meal and/or for most people. Winter in a savory form and summer in a sweet form are the best times to consume Takra. It is not an everyday drink. Maple syrup is heating, so please do not add it to Takra.

I could go on. Most recipes are not well balanced, use excessively heating spices and are not seasonally appropriate.

If you need a good book on Ayurveda — Ayurveda Lifestyle Wisdom by Acharya Shunya is a very good start.

Title: Wonderful resource throughout the year

Review: I’m new to Ayurveda and found this book to be really helpful, easy to use and not at all intimidating. There is some basic information about Ayurveda up front, but the bulk of the book is centered on both seasonal and everyday recipes. Each seasonal section starts with an overview of the characteristics of the season, the foods to be eating, foods to be avoiding, etc. It really sets the tone for the coming months and I’m looking forward to the next season of recipes to try.

There are some items you will likely need to add to your pantry, but once you have the staples on hand you’ll be ready to make most any recipe in the book. Nothing exotic or costly is required, which I appreciate. There are seasonal grocery lists at the start of each section which are hugely helpful. Most are familiar, while others might be new. I’ve personally enjoyed exploring new grains and spices, and incorporating different types of produce and sources of protein into my diet.

The recipes themselves are very easy to follow, have good portion sizes, and are easy to scale depending on your need. I’ve really enjoyed everything I’ve made so far (and that is coming from someone who regularly eats meat, dairy, soy, gluten, etc). I’ve focused on the spring recipes, which are very light but still comforting. I also used the ‘everyday’ recipes in preparation for an Ayurvedic spring cleanse, but have no doubt I’ll be turning to these again throughout the year.

Book is beautiful. Love the colorful photos and overall feel to it. It’s a good size for the kitchen and easy to keep open while cooking. There are also little tips and tricks sprinkled throughout the book — very helpful!
