THUMPERS // Galore: track by track

This should become this summer’s hit album.

Galore by Thumpers, released through Sub Pop Records

The first track I heard by this band was Galore, around a week before the release of this album (the 19th of May). I instantly loved it; the heavy percussion, cool electronics and catchy vocals and guitar solos really did it. So I heavily looked forward to the release of the album. After listening fully multiple times, I thought; let’s review it!

Track 1: Marvel

A good track as an opener, but wouldn’t fit anywhere else on the record. The lyrics make it feel a bit like a cliché lovesong, but it actually isn’t because the music is way better. Not a standout track though, but nice.

Track 2: Dancing’s Done

Fun track, but again not a standout. Still, it’s a really catchy and uplifting track. The drums are very cool here.

Track 3: Sound of Screams

Now that’s my favourite so far. This is great! Very uplifting and really catchy track, although the heavy use of samples in this makes it a bit of a chaos, but that doesn’t spoil the fun in any way!

Track 4: Unkinder (A Tougher Love)

This one is even better than Sound of Screams. Again very uplifting, but also an original sound, and epic solos! It’s going to be hard to beat such an exceptional track on the record.

Track 5: Come on Strong

My least favourite on the record, not really as catchy as the others. It’s got a really smart key change in the middle though.

Track 6: Now We Are Sixteen (ft. Summer Camp)

A way less heavy track than most of them, a little ambient, but beautiful, and a point of rest in this album, where the others are faster-paced.

Track 7: Tame

Whoa! Love this one. Doesn’t get better than Unkinder though, but still catchy and more than a little addictive! The signature distorted vocal riffs of the band are also heavily used here, which makes the song very unique compared to other tracks in this genre.

Track 8: Galore

I knew this one, and I love it. I’ve always liked percusion-heavy tracks, and this one is an example of pure awesomeness. Seriously. Doesn’t beat Unkinder, but very close.

Track 9: The Wilder Wise

Not better than Unkinder and Galore, but still beats the whole record in terms of epicness. I mean, have a listen to yourself, especially the bridge (“HYDRA! CARINA! SERPENS! LYNX! ORION, CORVUS! AURIGA! AND SUUUUUUN!”) — you’ll get it. Oh and there’s a hidden reprise of “Galore” in the end of this one, which is a bit weird, but nice.

Track 10: Roller

A catchy and, primarly, a fun track! You can hear that they amused themselves recording this one. And more heavy use of vocal rhythms, making it really cool.

Track 11: Running Rope

The album’s coming to an end, and this track follows that path. The penultimate track is more like Now We Are Sixteen, starting off calm, but building to a climax as the track comes to an end.

Track 12: Together Now

But you wouldn’t expect such an ending from this band, right? I wouldn’t. The last track is grand and happy, with even a few trumpets in the end!

That’s the end of the album. There’s a deluxe version, with a few extra tracks which are really cool. The band put up one of them, Velveteen, as a free download — certainly worth it, it’s such a great track. They also have some more stuff on their Soundcloud page.
