Q: Another One Of ‘The Blacks’ Has Been Murdered By Police, How Do You Feel? A: Like Everyday

After Alton Sterling was murdered by police summer 2016, a White colleague checked in on me to see how I was doing. I responded, “Like every day since I heard that audio of George Zimmerman hunt down and murder Trayvon Martin.” I explained to her that the way that she felt on that day, and maybe the way that she would feel for the next few days, is how I feel every day. I continued that I wanted her to remember this post Alton Sterling exchange every meeting where I am the only body and the only voice calling into question white supremacist reenactments playing out at our institutions of higher education across the nation, because the two are connected, IMO.

Within academe, these everyday white supremacist reenactments show up in the form of advancement of comparatively low accomplished/competence white males.

Everyday white supremacist reenactments show up in the form of ambiguous RPT policies and whimsical non-standardized review procedures.

White supremacist reenactments show up as dismissive attitudes toward the disciplines, professionalization of the professoriate, and the necessity of the tenure system altogether, at the same time that the academy claims to want to recruit and retain a more racially, culturally, and socially diverse faculty.

They show up in the form of personnel decisions based on what are widely known to be racially, culturally, and socially biased and psychometrically invalid student course evaluations.

White supremacist reenactments certainly show up looking like a more racially/culturally diverse faculty at one campus of a university being locked out and cut off from healthcare insurance in response to their demands to be compensated at the same rate as their less racially/culturally diverse counterpart at the institution’s other campus.

White supremacist reenactments show up in the form of non-democratic, non-transparent, non-collaborative higher education curriculum change.

And, white supremacist reenactments show up in the form of administrators, faculty, and an entire academic community allowing a white male student athlete to enter into a leadership awards ceremony and dinner naked save his swimming speedos to accept his “leadership” award.

Etcetera, etcetera.

The white supremacy that gets reenacted in the ways enumerated above, is the same white supremacy that murdered #Trayvon Martin #AltonSterling #PhilandoCastile #TerenceCrutcher, thousands before, in between, and after, unless we dismantle white supremacy in all of its manifestations. No one can do everything, but everyone can do something. Start where you are. For me, that involves truth telling and consciousness raising as resistance.

Knowledge Is Power. Power To The People. ✊🏽

So, that’s how I’m doing. “How you doing?”

One clap, two clap, three clap, forty?

By clapping more or less, you can signal to us which stories really stand out.
