Mark Zuckerberg covers his laptop webcam and microphone with tape

You’d better cover that webcam on your laptop, FBI Director says.

Mark’s Zuckerberg photo with both his webcam and his microphone covered with tape isn’t the only reason to rethink your privacy policy. The FBI Director does that too!

Speaking at a conference in Washington, D.C., the FBI Director James Comey weighed in on the mater and said that along with locking your house or car, covering laptop’s camera is another “sensible thing you should be doing”, noting that it’s a common practice among government officials. “You do that so that people who don’t have authority don’t look at you. I think that’s a good thing.”

It’s not that government is necessarily spying on you: in most cases you think too much of yourself. However, it’s pretty easy for hackers to manipulate your laptop camera remotely. So don’t be surprised to see pictures of you naked walking around your room. Besides covering laptop camera and microphone, you might also want to:

  • revoke the access of Facebook Messenger to camera and microphone on your smartphone,
  • revise access of other apps to contacts, geolocation, photos and videos on your smartphone.

Stay safe.
