Once or twice a month, we’ll share a few articles about women and money from the web. Some of the topics we’ll highlight are women and career, entrepreneurship, family, business, and retirement. If you have comments or questions or links to other headlines about women and money, please feel free to share!

Women and Money — Higher Education and Career

Women have embraced statistics showing that people who have college degrees earn significantly higher wages than those without a degree. More women enroll in degree programs than men now too. Yet, even though women are earning more college degrees, men still earn more money.

The above mentioned Forbes article explains how college majors and early career salary negotiations contribute to the gender pay gap and how advancement practices favoring men in many companies negate most of the progress to close the gap.

Just as the gender pay gap is still in headlines, a recent Motley Fool article in USA TODAY suggested forgetting wage gap talk and focusing on the raise gap instead. It might not surprise you that since women are many times receiving less pay for similar work, they also don’t receive raises at the same rate as men.

So what’s the suggestion? Gaining confidence and improving women’s negotiation skills. Check out their suggestions on how to do that and the Women Who Money article, How Should I Negotiate My Next Raise?

Women and Money — Business

Entrepreneur had another gender pay gap article out this week, this time focused on self-employed women. Again, you probably won’t be surprised there’s a gender pay gap for entrepreneurs too. The sad thing? The gap is even bigger. Is it systemic gender bias or women not placing a high enough value on their skills? Check out the article here.

Women and Money — Family

Did you secretly wish you could have just asked for money for a wedding gift and skip all the other registries? If you were afraid you might offend people (which was not a bad assumption), you might find it interesting that cash wedding registries are slowly becoming more popular.

With many marrying later and carrying significant debt, couples don’t hesitate as much to tell their loved ones and friends what they really need and want — money.

To be less offensive, many couples share their plans for the money. They include experiences like their honeymoon or how they are saving for a downpayment for a home.

Does it work and how do people who get invited to weddings feel about it? Check out The Atlantic’s article, When the Happy Couple Registers for Cash.

Women and Money — Retirement

This week, Kiplinger posted an article called 3 Strikes Against Women in Retirement.

Is the deck stacked against women? Yes.

Women face the gender wage gap, the raise gap, entrepreneurs make less, and they tend to be caregivers in the sandwich generation. In addition to these, strikes in the article include a longer life expectancy, less saved for retirement, and reduced Social Security and pensions.

To wrap up Women and Money in the News, one more gap some women have to face — the divorce gap.

Whether you are single, in a relationship, married, or divorced — you should read the Time Money article, This Is the Single Best Way Divorced Women Can Secure a Successful Retirement. What is that way? You’ll have to read to find out.
