Broadway Danny Rose (1984)

I think (and as always, this is open to debate) the essence of a Woody Allen movie can be summed up as a fusion of several essential components that are often visible in his body of work. Although there can be variances and exceptions among his films, such as cast, tone, and location, the following themes and traits frequently relate to Woody Allen’s work:

  1. Characters that are neurotic, reflective and who frequently ponder existential issues are the focus of many of Woody Allen’s films. They frequently engage in quick-witted conversation and are well-read and academically motivated. Think of both Alvy and Isaac Davis from Annie Hall and Manhattan respectively.
  2. New York City as a Character: Because of his love for the city, Allen regularly uses it as both a setting and a character in his movies. He portrays the city with both romanticism and realism, capturing its vibrancy, diversity, and uniqueness. Additionally, while he often shows a romanticised version of New York it’s grounded in reality with many experiences still available to anyone visiting today.
  3. Comedy and Tragicomedy: Allen frequently combines comedy and tragicomedy in his films. In order to examine important and philosophical topics and highlight the underlying inconsistencies and absurdities of life, he expertly employs humour, sarcasm, and razor sharp one-liners.
  4. Love and Relationships: Allen regularly explores the complexity of relationships, looking at the dynamics between friends, families, and romantic partners. He examines issues like love, betrayal, longing, and the difficulties of human connection, frequently presenting flawed and nuanced people.
  5. Existentialism and philosophy: Many of Woody Allen’s films are heavily influenced by philosophical and existential issues. He ponders the purpose of life, passing away, morality, and the possibility of a greater force. These issues frequently cause his characters to reflect on themselves with references to named philosophers.
  6. Homages and Influences: Woody Allen is influenced by a wide range of authors, filmmakers, and creatives. He incorporates allusions to famous moviemakers who have influenced his filmmaking like Federico Fellini and Ingmar Bergman as a tribute to their work. He also makes literary greats like Anton Chekhov and Fyodor Dostoevsky reference.
  7. Jazz & Music: Allen’s films frequently feature music, especially jazz. He frequently incorporates jazz soundtracks and performances into his stories to create a unique atmosphere and rhythm. They also serve as a musical education to the audience, especially New Orleans Jazz.
  8. Visual Aesthetics: Depending on the time period and collaborators, Allen’s films frequently have a distinct visual aesthetic. He has collaborated with renowned cinematographers like Gordon Willis and Vittorio Storaro to produce compositions that are both aesthetically stunning and memorable.

I believe that the core of a Woody Allen movie is its blend of brilliance, neuroticism, wit, philosophical musings, complex relationships, and a love of New York City. His films frequently combine humour and drama, encouraging viewers to reflect on important issues while understanding the complexity and quirks of the human condition. For this I have been grateful for many years and will continue to be every time I watch one of his films.
