How does ‘Design Thinking’ Materialises Your Innovative Ideas?

A few days ago, I was reminded of my childhood when we used to spend hours and hours in the library to search for a particular topic. Even though internet had evolved by the time I reached my late teens, the idea to access a myriad of information in just a click was still a little vague.

But now, you need information? It’s just a click away. Think of the first browser you ever used, try to remember the page, its navigation. Of course, it was easy then, but if asked to use the same browser now, it would definitely make you cry.

What made the use of this browser so easy and why do we love Google now? What’s the story behind the innovative idea of Google browser? Is it the change in the design?

Design Thinking, is a solution based methodology. Once the problem is identified, through design thinking one provides a solution to the problem, it can be as innovative as brining in an easy to access knowledge through a click.

To give you a definition of design thinking, Design Thinking is a design methodology that provides a solution-based approach to complex problems. It’s extremely useful in de-constructing complex problems that are ill-defined or unknown, by understanding the human needs involved, by re-framing the problem in human-centric ways, by creating many ideas in brainstorming sessions, and by adopting a hands-on approach in prototyping and testing.’

When said, design thinking is a solution — based approach to solve a problem, keeping in mind human needs, it definitely, in some way or the other, leads to innovative ideas. Let us take the example of revolutionary mobile phones. We did have land line and we also had the facility to speak to people very far away from us. Then why did mobiles come into picture? Simple, human need!

Yes, when someone saw the need of turning the same technology of calling and speaking to someone on the go, any place and anytime, that’s when they came up with the groundbreaking mobile phones. But how did the identification of this need materialise? It was a vision, a knowledge and understanding of what radio waves can do. It was a vision of an Entrepreneur, Martin Cooper, the founder of Motorola.

He saw the scope of wireless communication, envisioned the end product and then technically began with the designing of cellphone. Hence, innovation!

So, what’s the story behind these innovation and pioneering ideas you ask? It’s the vision, vision of emerging entrepreneurs, like you! Entrepreneurs with novel ideas and a vision to bring the same into reality can do so by mastering the art of design thinking!

Another pioneer, Steve Jobs, said that they do not see design as how a thing looks, but how it works. That’s why now Apple is one of the most looked up company when it comes to cell phones. Be it the look, or the navigation, or just the features, Apple stands to be the best in terms of user satisfaction. How did Jobs make this possible? The answer is Empathy.

Customer experience journey

As mentioned, design thinking finds solutions which is based on human needs which leads to problem identification of the targeted users, which then leads to innovative ideas, and how does one understand that? By empathising. Being a ‘we-want-more’ humans, we literally desire that everything should happen in just one click. It’s like we need a genie, we just rub the lamp, ask for what we need and viola, it should show up!

How will this happen, unless the genie understands exactly what we want? This is the biggest challenge that most business face, they fail to empathise with the user which in turn leads to lack of innovative ideas, which ultimately leads to the downfall of the company. That’s what happened to Orkut — if you still remember that once it was a famous social media platform as Facebook is now.
