Silicon Valley arrogance: “I can tell you which startups will succeed, without even knowing what…

As a manager in tech, if my employees are always working long hours or weekends, I would demote my project manager and second question my leadership abilities. Rome wasn’t built in a day but we are no longer constructing civilizations. We’re developing apps to get laid, deliver food to our front doorsteps, and command cars from Point A to B. This isn’t heart surgery. Lives won’t be lost if laptops aren’t cracked open weeknights and weekends. Customers can wait another damn month to desire products they lived happily without much of their lifetime. And cry me a river venture capital firms won’t go hungry if a check doesn’t deposit tomorrow.

Working long, unnecessary hours is commonly confused for honest employee commitment, company passion or community spirit. Nothing can be farther from the truth.

If you dig, most employees show up because

a) they fear losing their job because they aren’t publicly seen as productive as fellow coworkers

b) escaping or avoiding an unfulfilling home/life environment; work is a LESS dysfunctional relationship

c) fervently believe it is only the pathway for promotion (I worked ‘X’ extra hours= raise, higher title and bonus).

Mayer is delusional.
