Word of the Day has spent 365 days this year picking new noteworthy words to enrich your vocabulary. So many splendid words remind us daily of the beauty of the English language. So before we officially turn the page, Word of the Day wants to recall some significant moments of this year.

Word of the Day app users have saved featured words around 93K times this year. That means that on average, each word has been saved around 255 times. According to the likes and saves in the app, the most popular words are Polemicist, Chimera and Quagmire. Meanwhile, based on the votes from the Year-in-Review Survey and likes from the app, Kakorrhaphiophobia, Quagmire and Monachopsis hold the top three positions as the Words of the Year.

We’ve discovered Medium this year. The first article Foreign words and phrases now used in English was published in July. Looks like our readers are real bookworms as the article you liked most is Five books to expand your vocabulary.

The other social media we’ve paid great attention to is YouTube. Our in-house linguist, Kenny, together with our creative producer, Hanna, launched their show Word Ninjas about the most obscure words in the English language. They have dozens of unique, fascinating, and varied words to show you. There are already three videos with the most challenging words on their channel — Five Words Challenge, Japanese Words You Must Know and Top 5 words of 2021.

We’ve also asked our users about their personal word discoveries this year. These are the words they’ve found from a book or an article, heard on a podcast, YouTube, TV show, movie or a song. We’ve gathered them together to make a word cloud so that we can share it with you.

Stay tuned. We have no intentions to stop, and so much more to show you next year!
