We live in a parliamentary democracy — if Britain elects a government with a manifesto which states that they will not act on the referendum result because it was the result of a tissue of disastrous lies, and would be calamitous then that government would have a democratic mandate to do exactly that — whatever the result of a previous referendum result. As a democratic device, a general election trumps an advisory referendum.
