WaterAid is an international not-for-profit, determined to make clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene the norm for everyone, everywhere, within a generation. Since they started in 1981, they’ve remained resolutely focused on tackling these three essentials that transform people’s lives and have reached over 27 million people with clean water so far.

We spoke to Elise from the WaterAid Corporate Partnerships team to discover how the organisation works with businesses, and how Work for Good has helped them build relationships with smaller companies:

“Our partnerships with businesses are vital for our work, and we’re lucky enough to have an increasing number of start-ups and smaller businesses looking for ways to support us. We’re so grateful for this, and always really pleased to hear about the passion they have for doing good through their business.”

But like most charities, WaterAid’s fundraisers increasingly need to explore further avenues to support their crucial work. The resources involved in setting up business partnerships can be prohibitive when it comes to setting up agreements with smaller businesses.

“We face some challenges when approaching commercial agreements with a business. As our number of enquiries grow, we have had to reluctantly turn down opportunities with smaller businesses or start-ups, as we lack the time and resources to support the partnership to its full potential. This is a real shame and disappointing for both the business and WaterAid.”

In a fundraising climate where every donation truly counts, WaterAid turned to Work for Good to help support their business donors.

“Work for Good has really helped us with the growing number of queries we receive from small businesses and start-ups. It’s been fantastic to offer these businesses a viable option to fund our work, instead of having to turn them down, as we have done in the past. The platform is easy to use, and the effort and hard work that has gone and continues to go into it is apparent. It allows us to easily see which companies support us and read their stories, which is great for building better relationships.”

As well as opening up a new source of donations, WaterAid see the benefits of Work for Good as extending beyond that.

“Small businesses and start-ups can make a huge difference to our work by utilising Work for Good. Raising awareness is hugely important to us, so when a business supports WaterAid, that allows us to reach even more people with our message and hopefully bring some new supporters on board too! We make a much bigger difference by working together, helping millions of people gain access to clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene, and bringing lasting change to their lives, and we’re so grateful to everyone supporting us through Work for Good.”

By referring any small business enquiries to Work for Good instead of turning them away, WaterAid are paving the way for a new wave of business philanthropy.

“It’s been a real game changer for WaterAid, and I’d encourage any charities thinking of using the platform to sign up and give it a go.”
