Transforming a Legacy: The Heritage School’s Journey to Success
How Principal Dyanand Sugrim Transformed a School on the Brink of Chaos and the Birth of a Unique Idea
In the heart of New York City, The Heritage School stood as a symbol of lost potential, grappling with a dismal 5% graduation rate and on the border of closing down. Enter Principal Dyanand Sugrim in 2012, whose commitment and innovative methodologies ignited a transformation. Within four years, the graduation rate skyrocketed to an astonishing 95%, reshaping the futures of countless students.
Sugrim’s approach was multifaceted, combining rigorous academic standards with a deeply personalized support system. He believed in the potential of every student, instilling a culture of safety and growth. In this documentary, Sugrim highlights several key components that are attributable to student success. Supported by his now former Assistant principal, Daniel Milbrand, at New Visions Advanced in NYC, the tale of taking this model to others schools is clear: the model can be replicated and scaled.
The Birth of “Work for Love” Amidst the Chaos
Amid this educational renaissance, a unique idea was born. Jacob Black, a student profoundly impacted by Sugrim’s transformative leadership, envisioned an idea that would help students secure jobs while still in high school.
Jacob’s journey began after getting a job and teaching his friend Sam Williams how to land one. Soon thereafter word spread quickly and without any strategic or business elements, Sam & Jacob helped over 25 of their peers get jobs working in the surrounding neighborhoods of NYC. Sam quickly started earning $600 a week by working 20 hours a week after school in a restaurant. This success story sparked the founding of “Work for Love,” a nonprofit dedicated to equipping students with the skills and opportunities to thrive in the workforce. A key question Work for Love asks, “what would the impact be if we took this model, added some strategy and multiplied by 10,000?”
The documentary delves into the synergy between Sugrim’s educational reforms and Work for Love’s bold vision. Sugrim, initially taken aback by Jacob’s initiative, soon recognized its potential and the clear need for change.
Jacob and Sugrim both share a bold vision: to replicate the success of both the Heritage Model and Work for Love’s Model Nationwide. They believe that if students in East Harlem can excel academically while gaining valuable work experience, students across the United States can achieve the same.
Conclusion
The Work for Love documentary captures the essence of resilience, innovation, and the profound impact of dedicated educators. It underscores the message that with the right support and opportunities, students can transcend their circumstances and build brighter futures. As “Work for Love” expands its reach, it aims to empower students Nationwide, proving that with grit and guidance, no dream is too big to achieve.
