Whoops, I F**ked up
There are a lot of moments in the life of an entrepreneur when you genuinely F**k up.
I think it’s among the most important lessons you pick up along the way.
Failures. And, dealing with them.
And, it’s not just you. Every major company you see has a list of fuckups in its journey. Do you remember the old Pepsi fiasco or the one with Coca-cola and pesticides?
The point being, everyone screws up once in a while.
And being an entrepreneur is a very tricky situation to be in. While the strategy to extinguish the fire might be subjective, it’s the priorities that matter.
While Pepsi, maintained an air of normalcy, presuming there was no crisis among its consumers. They simply used Youth icons to steer their brand through. Sachin grabs a bottle from SRK explaining, “Pepsi is not safe, it might get stolen”.
Coca-cola on the other hand reached Aamir Khan, who assured consumers that he personally inspected the coca-cola manufacturing. Hence lending his credibility to the brand.
Both companies soothed consumer fears and brought their revenue to normal, but crisis management approaches were different. In my entrepreneurial journey, I’ve made a few fuckups as well. My approach has been more of a coke-like. If I had to put it in pointers, it’ll be something like:
- Address the issue directly (most important)
- Fix the problem (if fixable)
- Apologize, genuinely
- Set guidelines to make sure it’s never repeated. Trust me, it will be repeated if guidelines are not set timely.
- Learn from your mistake, and move on.
If you’ve had fuckups and learned from them, please tell me about it. I’m more than eager to hear from you.
Remember, just because you f**ked up, it doesn’t mean you’re a f**k-up.
