Understanding Paracolic Gutter: Anatomy, Functions and Clinical Significance
The Paracolic Gutter is a cavity that is situated between the lateral peritoneal wall and the Colon. Its primary function is to facilitate drainage and maintain the dynamics of the fluid. Found on either side of the colon this gutter extends from the diaphragm to the pelvis covering both the ascending and descending colon.
There are two types of Paracolic Gutter.
- Right Paracolic Gutter
- Left Paracolic Gutter
Paracolic Gutters are of hierarchical importance. It consists of both the right and left paracolic gutters, which run along the ascending and descending colon. Channels have functions, both in drainage and in maintaining equilibrium.
