The official 2018 World Chess Championship broadcast will introduce emoji in chess notation: turtle, bomb, skull and other signs that are common for text messages, will be added to chess notation. Emoji will be also be made available for free to media and other chess broadcasters.

Emoji will compliment the classic chess notation (don’t worry, it’s not going anywhere!) and hopefully will help spectators who are not professional chess players to better understand what’s happening on the chess board and will help them to identify dramatic moments.

Broadcasting engine will automatically determine and add emoji based on game analysis:

Blunder (a skull) will be shown if two chess engines show a delta of -1.50 to ∞.

Mistake (a sad face) will appear when two chess engines calculate a delta between -1.00 and -1.50.

There are emoji for critical points in the game, a mate in 10, and more. We will be adding more emoji as we go along and as we get spectators’ feedback.

Emoji as they will appear in the broadcast.

Emoji are part of the effort to make chess broadcasting interesting and intuitive for chess fans who are not professional players and are not used to reading chess notation.

Media can request graphics for use in their chess broadcasts. These emoji will appear in the 2018 Official World Chess Championship broadcast.
