We have redesigned the Championship Medal, now it’s meaningful and eternal and signifies exactly what it should: one of the most prestigious sports titles on the planet.

The official World Chess Championship Medal

Approximately 10 minutes after the World Chess Championship Match is finished and the winner is determined, the Champion is taken to a special lounge to be able to hug his family and wait for the press conference.

The Championship Medal is displayed in this lounge and it will be officially awarded to the Champion together with the laurel wreath after the results are announced by the Chief Arbiter.

The World Chess Championship Medal represents one of the most prestigious titles in sports, yet it has never been properly developed and therefore did not have a recognizable design. Until now.

Chess medals should avoid using knights and queens! This is not the official medal.

We (together with Shuka Design) completely redesigned the Championship Medal mindful of the fact that the Championships take place in different cities but still need to have some continuity and design integrity.

The face of the medal has four parts: the official logo of the Match, the year of the Match written in roman numerals, the crest or logo of the city (some cities don’t have a recognizable logo, so we can use a landmark), and the statement for a specific Match (in 2018, we used ‘The World Is Watching’).

As you probably know, to win the Match (and to receive the medal!) the player has to score 6.5 points (1 for a win, 0.5 for a draw and 0 for a loss). If there are tie-breaks, there will be blitz games and possibly an Armageddon round.

Let’s see who wins!

You can follow the Match live on worldchess.com/london. We’ll make sure the medal is visible during the awards ceremony.
