The Refugee Crisis: A Call-to-Action
Today, we are witnessing the largest refugee crisis in history and the integrity of the international refugee regime is under threat. The demise of this system would come at the cost of international stability. World for Refugees (WFR) is a youth- and refugee-led campaign crafting new humanitarian solutions to transform the global issue of refugee safety and security into a local issue. By amplifying the stories of refugees within communities and empowering refugees to lead the campaign in their area, we hope to draw more attention to the cause.
World For Refugees advocates and raises funds for the Adopt-a-Future campaign, which supports education programs for refugees. The Project’s goal is to urgently begin to share the financial burden of paying for both UNHCR and the costs of supporting refugee populations more equitably. WFR will focus on specific policy goals to be obtained in each country, which center around increasing funding for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and increasing refugee quotas.
The Project will also operate in as many countries as possible. This comes from an understanding that there are refugees living in nearly every country on earth and that the refugee crisis is a shared global responsibility. The refugee crisis is not the concern of one sole nation, but a global humanitarian challenge calling for international peace and solidarity. As such, it should be collectively owned and collectively solved.
“It’s not ‘us versus them’ or even ‘us on behalf of them.’ For a design thinker it has to be ‘us with them”
– Tim Brown, CEO and President of IDEO
The Project is especially dedicated to visibility and representation. As an initiative led by a refugee and committed to diversity and representation amongst its staff, the Project as a whole is committed to amplifying the voices and visibility of refugees in their communities where it is safe to do so.
By ignoring the refugee crisis, we are denying basic human rights to millions of people. World for Refugees allows passionate individuals to become personally involved in creating peace and stability for those who are being forcefully displaced from their homes and constantly being denied their basic and most fundamental rights. The refugee crisis matters to me for the same reason that it should matter to everyone: I am human. Education and action are rooted in empathy and I am passionate about creating change to support sustainability, safety, and solidarity.
If you feel equally passionate about the ongoing refugee crisis, share this story and follow us on social to stay educated.
