Madonna, Batman, and WordPress

…Or why you should always be watching your WordPress website

Your company could be in the middle of a very expensive disaster. It sounds like hyperbole and maybe it is but if your company’s website is built on WordPress, it’s not out of the question.

“Jamie, what the hell are you talking about? Disaster? Expensive?” But be honest, there is a bit of doubt creeping in right now, isn’t there?

WordPress is a very popular CMS (content management system). More than 30% of the entire internet is powered by WordPress because it’s easy to use, relatively simple to set up, and has a comparatively low cost of entry (kind of, but that’s a different post). The reason it’s popular with developers is the same reason it’s popular with hackers.

The nightly news and popular media would have you believe that there are thousands of hackers out there trying to hack into your life and steal your identity. There aren’t and for the most part, you are safe. But you are also, for the most part, safe when you get in your car every morning yet you still have insurance for your car. For the most part, your house is safe from day to day but your house is insured. Your giant vault of diamonds? Yeah. Probably safe (get it? safe!). But you’ve insured them.

You insure these things because if something were to happen, you pay much less to restore them or their value than you would if they weren’t insured. Keith Richards will (allegedly) get $1.6 million if something were to happen to his hands. Madonna will (again, allegedly) get $2 million were something to ever happen to her breasts. But what about your website?

Consistent maintenance is the insurance for your WordPress website. Unlike many types of insurance which are passive, keeping your WordPress website safe is an active process. Constantly updating plugins and the WordPress core. Keeping an eye on the user accounts and people trying to login to your site. Someone who is there to just make sure that everything is as it should be. As long as you are insured you pay a lot less when something goes wrong, if anything does at all, to get everything running smoothly again.
