Want to know about the data Units. Read our complete blog post to know the complete concept of Data units and clear your concept about Megabyte, Gigabyte, etc.

First, start with your query that how many Megabytes are in Gigabytes of RAM. There are 1024MB (megabytes) in one GB (gigabyte) in RAM or any data storage device. Just like meter is the unit of height, Kilogram is the unit of weight. These bytes are used to show the data capacity of any storage device.

Mega, Giga, Peta are actually the prefixes that show the more availability of data storage capacity.

How big is Gigabyte than Megabyte?

One Gigabyte is 1024 times more than Megabytes. These are storage capacities that store apps, images, and other important data in your tech gadget whether it’s a laptop or a phone

The hard drive in a modern PC or laptop has hundreds and thousands of gigabytes. Hard drives and modern SSD have more storage capacity with better data storing ability similar capacity or even thousands of gigabytes, which are called terabytes (TB).

Here is the list of data units:

  • 1 bit = 0 or 1 (smallest unit)
  • 1 Byte = 8 bits
  • 1kB = 1024 Bytes
  • 1MB = 1024KB
  • 1GB = 1024MB
  • 1TB = 1024GB (biggest unit)

What is the Basic Unit of storage capacity?

Bit: Digital computers deal with binary digits or bits. A bit can be 0 or 1 indicating true or false manner of the electrical signal, which is equivalent as 1 = ON, 0 = OFF.

Byte: One byte has eight binary digits, such as 10100001.

What are bigger units of Data?

Kilobyte (kB): KB is greater than bytes but is the smallest data capacity of a Computer , smartphone, tablet.. A KiloByte has 1024 Bytes. That’s why 1KB is the same as 1024 x 8 = 8192 binary digits.

Megabyte (MB): 1 (MB) Megabyte is equal to 1024 Kilobytes (KB)

Gigabyte (GB): 1 (GB) Gigabyte is equal to 1024 Megabytes (MB)

Terabyte (TB): 1 (MB) Terabyte is equal to 1024 Gigabytes (GB)

Why RAM data capacity is less than Hard disk Or ROM?

RAM stands for Random Access Memory. It is a volatile memory that is used to store data that is being used for a temporary time. Unlike RAM, Hard disk and ROM both are permanent storage devices that are used to store data for a permanent time. As depending upon the user’s need, data can be from Megabytes to Terabytes. Therefore, Hard disk and ROM have higher data capacity than RAM.

Usually, RAM is available in the market for 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB data capacity.

Whereas Hard disks are available for 100GB, 500GB, and even 1TB data capacity.

Conclusion:

I hope that your concept about all the data units has been cleared and now you understand the difference between the units and their data capacity.
