A Yoga type that listens to your personality, Ayurveda

A few weeks ago, after a manic (but stimulating) day at work I tried a new type of yoga, Ayurveda. I had never heard about this variation before and I felt like getting out from my comfort zone! But what’s Ayurveda Yoga?

1. Yoga adapated to your Dosha

Before to become a yoga variation, Ayurveda was a system of medicine from India. Ayurveda differentiates people in 3 energies: Fire, Water and Air. These «energies» are called «doshas» and determine the type of yoga we should practice in order to find our balance in life.

Yoga is good, but can be more beneficial when the practice is correctly adapted to your characteristics/personality (doshas). Ayurveda teaches us that we should find our balance; to avoid any situations of excess and to find the ultimate peace. Happiness is about balance.

2. But, how does it work?

Throughout our lives, our bodies constantly self-regulate, striving to maintain this natural state of equilibrium. Put it simply, the goal is to avoid imbalance, which would cause negative situations of excess, whether it be stress, sadness, joy, excitement or anxiety.

The 3 doshas (or energies) can be found in everyone and everything, but in different proportions. The practice leads us to maintain the healthy ratio of vata, pitta, and kapha that we were born with to ensure equilibrium.

3. Can you tell what “Dosha” are you?

The ratio of vata, pitta, and kapha within each of us, has a considerable influence on our individual physical, mental, and emotional character traits.

  • Vata Dosha (Wind Energy) is composed of the space and air elements. Vata people are creativite and flexible. They govern all movements from the flow of breath, the pulsation of the heart, all muscle contractions, tissue movements, cellular mobility – and communication throughout the mind and nervous system.
  • Pitta Dosha (Fire Energy) is made up of the fire and wager elements. Pitta people are neither mobile nor stable, but spreads – much as the warmth of a fire permeates its surroundings. They are intelligent, understanding, and master transformation. They govern nutrition, metabolism, body temperature and the art of understanding.
  • Kapha Dosha (Water Energy) is a mix of the Earth and Water elements. Kapha people are structured, solid and represent the ground that provides the cohesiveness needed to maintain a particular form. They are often associated with love and compassion.
