Medium is Social Writing
The power to start something really cool!
When I stumbled upon Medium my first thought was, “well another blogging portal”. I read some of the highlighted posts and realized that you can comment inside the post. It’s like a Wiki. Immediate feedback, thoughts, substitutes to the text passage which matters. Fantastic.
Adding references to other sources to a post you’ve never written is always great. And all of this through your sole Twitter account.
Simple and Powerful
Through simplicity comes power. This is true for Medium. You have a solid foundation of well designed typographical elements and an opinionated choice to choose from when you write your articles. This is what I’m experiencing at this moment.
This is my first post on Medium and I write it exactly that way how it is consumed by the reader. Full control on how the post looks like and nothing more needed than the browser. Oh wait, some readers may think, well, Wordpress has this too. Yep. But styling doesn’t happen inline, image uploads are not so intuitive like they are in Medium.
Medium simply allows you to write and focus on writing without distraction!
This is something I haven’t encountered so far by any other blogging platform outside. If there are others, please leave a comment.
Social Writing
I believe that Medium has the power to become for writers what Github is for developers. You interact on topics, on thoughts, everyone can participate, no one is locked out, everyone can be part of this. You can write together on a whole story, sharing drafts among each other and publish them after finalizing the last words.
Also setting up collections and inviting people to write on them is as setting up a github repository and taking pull requests granted.
How to Start?
Simple. Read through this introduction, signup with your Twitter account and you are good to go. You can immediately discuss inside of posts and leave your own references. To start writing you need an invitation. It took some days after I got the invite to start posting my own stuff, so not sure how fast the process will be as more people come on board.
