What gets you out of bed in the morning?
So, it’s been a hot minute since I’ve posted on here – and I’ve missed it.
I’ve been taking some time off and getting my mental health back on track. I’m feeling a lot better and whilst this has been going on, I’ve also had a bit of a breakthrough.
And that breakthrough has been realising….
The importance of having a purpose.
By ‘purpose’ I mean that thing that gives you enormous amounts of joy.
That thing that gets you motivated and inspired like nothing else.
That thing that gets you out of bed in the morning.
I now realise the importance in having a purpose, because I used to think I didn’t have one. For the longest time I got out of bed, went to work, came home, had dinner, and went to bed.
Again and again and again.
But — where was my purpose? My motivation? My inspiration?
(Well, ‘past Jessica’, it’s been there all along, you just hadn’t been looking hard enough.)
Looking back, since I was a teenager, i’ve always wanted to help people.
I’ve wanted to be a police woman, a doctor, a therapist.
In some way, I wanted to help others.
This ‘purpose’ slowly faded, as I did nothing about it and decided that path was not for me.
I still don’t think a therapist, or a doctor, or police woman is the right path for me… But helping others? There’s my purpose.
So…
This is what i’m going to do. I’m going to help people.
This might be through my writing, speaking, making videos or who knows what. But i’m going to do it.
Not having a reason to get out of bed in the morning sucks. Big time. That’s why if you haven’t already, I urge you to find yours.
Listen to your intuition, meditate, write — whatever helps you to really listen to yourself.
The Japanese call this concept ‘Ikigai’ — which translates to ‘reason for being’.
Find your Ikigai. And take it with open arms.
Your purpose in life is to find your purpose and give your whole heart and soul to it. — Buddha
So tell me, what gets you out of bed in the morning?
