Background:

Daniel Lee Siebert was born June 17, 1954 in Illinois. It was believed that he had a tragic upbringing. He was physically and sexually abused by his father. At 11 years old, his mother left his father, and he was hopeful for a positive change. Instead, his mother would continue raising him in a life of instability, frequently bringing home different men. Daniel would eventually join the Marines, only to receive a dishonorable discharge.

Little is known about his life for the next twenty years. Other than he was convicted of manslaughter in Las Vegas sometime in 1979. The details are vague, though.

In 1986, Daniel Siebert was known as Daniel Spence, working as an art teacher at the Alabama Institute for the Death and Blind. A student he had shown interest in was found murdered in her apartment after being reported missing. He was questioned and then linked to fingerprints from the crime scene. This is when the police discovered his true identity. It was also learned that he had a previous conviction of manslaughter from 1979 and was wanted for assault charges in San Francisco. (Police would later learn that the person that pressed the charges was one of his first victims. He wasn’t aware they lived through his tortuous acts.)
