How to promote your work on social media as an amateur writer?

1. Don’t be overly-promotional

Consider this an official warning — it’s time to stop spamming people with your content. The urge to shout from the rooftops that you have written something new makes sense. And yes, promotion can be a thing. But it can also be an easy way to turn people off your content and even to make them completely turn off notifications related to your posts.

So how can you tell the difference between the write approach and over-promotion? It’s pretty simple. Over-promotion is overwhelming. If all of your posts are about the stories you write, then you’re probably dipping your toes into the over-promotional category.

If you post nothing but “read my story or like my poems” people aren’t going to be interested. They’re going to click unfollow.

This is one of the biggest mistakes authors make on social media, but it’s also one of the easiest to fix. It’s all about balance! Yes, promote your work. Be excited about sharing! Just don’t over-do it.

2. Don’t be UNDER-promotional. (or non-promotional at all)

Sharing your work is terrifying. Especially if you’re an introvert, or you’re a little bit terrified of being seen as overly promotional or spammy. But here’s something you should know:

If you don’t share your work, people won’t support it.

Think about it. If you don’t tell people that you write, how can you expect them to know and support you? Your work should be easy-to-find and accessible. If you write on a blog, put a link in your bio or in a pinned tweet.

As new people discover your content and follow you, you want to make it easy for them to check out your work. Will like your work and follow you right away? Maybe not, but that’s not actually the goal.

When it comes to getting people to follow you, it’s not as simple as “sees posts, immediately becomes a follower”. In fact, people usually need to see something a couple of times before they follow you. Does that mean you go out and post about you’re your work ten times in a row? Definitely not.

Instead, you want to find ways to spread information about your work in a way that is organic. You may re-share *other* people talking about your work, and yes — talk about your own stories/ poetry. Share the link to it from time to time!

You can write your stories and poetry on WriteSome App, we regularly look for new content on our app and share them with our writer community.
