hieroglyphics
The Alphabet’s Brilliant Conquest

I’m sorry to jump in with something else pedantic — because I really do love your writing; don’t get me wrong — but a lot of Egyptologists bristle at the word “hieroglyphics,” even though it’s in common use (and, yes, several dictionaries do include it).

The symbols are called hieroglyphs (singular hieroglyph). The script is called hieroglyphic — as an adjective.

So it’d be more accurate to say, “the hieratic script is the cursive form of the hieroglyphic script.”

Again, sorry for being pedantic. This is like insisting that you say “edited with Photoshop” instead of just “Photoshopped.” I know. I know. Please keep researching and writing these pieces. It’s truly great to see another Near Eastern Bronze Age fan here on Medium.
