Thanks for sharing that story, Trish. That guy sounds like a real jerk; the kind of traveler who gives tourists a bad name. I hope this article didn’t sound like it’s coming from that perspective —it even pokes fun at those tourists who never make any effort to get to know the local people, then go home and brag about their “brave adventure in a foreign land.” Believe me, I find those people just as irritating as you do — and for me, that’s not what traveling is about at all. Like the article says, it’s about putting yourself in situations where your old unconscious habits don’t work, so you’ve got to “wake up,” pay attention, and really work to understand the place you’re in. For me, that’s the best feeling in the world.
