Shoojit Sircar’s Pink is a very important movie. Considering the times we live in. It very clearly and simply puts across the real problems women face today — the fact that they’re still treated as the ‘weaker’ sex (whatever that means), how women are ready to turn on women, and how society is so quick to make a judgement when it comes to a woman, but not a man.

Is it ‘ground-breaking’ though? Not really. It is contemporary, yes, and pretty well made, but some parts, like Piyush Mishra’s over-the-top and hammy prosecution lawyer, and Amitabh Bachchan’s backstory with his wife — seemed unnecessary to me.

What is good though is that the film ends on a hopeful, positive note. The girls, all three of them — Taapsee Pannu, Kirti Kulhari and Andrea Tariang — give such grounded, real performances that at some points in the film you feel like you’re watching a documentary. And what do I say about Amitabh Bachchan? He plays the bipolar lawyer, Deepak Sehgal, with such an amazing balance of restraint and panache, that it’s hard not to admire the man. He defends the girls with everything he’s got, and maybe THAT’S the message Pink is trying to give us — if only we defended our women with the same gusto he did, the world MIGHT be a better place.

Pink is good, and you should watch it. However, I also suggest you watch another film on women empowerment from the 80s, Mirch Masala, directed by Ketan Mehta.
