If you’ve heard of the phrase ‘time is a great healer’, also know this — time is a great leveller.

This past week has been nothing short of a roller-coaster ride. I went from being king of the world to being another commoner. I was the captain of my life’s ship, and now I’ve hit rough seas.

What is it you must do when you run into rough seas?

  1. Never regret the good times you had earlier. It’s easy to look at the past and label the WHOLE thing as a bad stretch of time, but if you’re willing to dig a little deeper, you’ll find that you had some of the best moments of your life. Cherish those. It’ll help you tide over.
  2. Ensure you have a good support system. Even if it is just one friend, many friends or your family. They’re your motivators, your ‘hands on deck’. Remember though, YOU have to be at the steering. It’s your life. And I can’t repeat this often enough — you are the captain of your life. Be ready to support your support system too, whenever they need you.
  3. Don’t begin a blame game. There’s no one to blame. Yes, there are situations that go wrong. But that’s due to a combination of factors. Take responsibility for your actions, one way or the other. Put it in the log book for future reference.
  4. Always forward. Forward, always. This is something I learnt from Luke Cage (on Netflix, a must watch). So while it is okay to feel bad, and it is okay to reminisce, remember that life is what happens ahead. You can’t steer a ship looking behind now, can you?
  5. Finally, remember that the whole world isn’t made of water. 29% of it is still land. So keep going, and you WILL find land. There is always a way out of rough seas. If the sea has to consume you, then it is fate. But even then, make it hard, REALLY hard. Don’t give up.

That’s all for today. Now I must get back to the steering wheel…
