June 25th, 2009.

An important day in many ways. For one, it was the 26th anniversary of India’s famous World Cup win in 1983. It was also the 46th birthday of George Michael.

But June 25th, 2009 will mostly be remembered as the day Michael Jackson left us. Now the controversy surrounding his death, and his problems with abuse (of many kinds) has been documented by the media quite a lot.

There’s one thing you can’t deny though — he left an indelible impression on world music. Even at the age of 30 (nearing 31 now) my feet start tapping the moment an MJ song comes on. Remember this scene from The Mask? MJ had that effect on you. He was naughty to the point of being impish, and boy, he could sing and dance. I’m just going to list down my Top 5 Michael Jackson songs, in remembrance.

  1. Thriller — my all-time favourite. What makes this song so great is, while it’s a blast to listen to, the music video makes it possibly one of the greatest horror shorts of its time.
  2. Bad — It’s a music video directed by Martin Scorcese. That’s all you need to know.
  3. Smooth Criminal—That one shot of him leaning over and getting back up again in the same motion. THAT ONE SHOT.
  4. Black or White — This crazy music video starts off with a cameo by John Goodman and Macaulay Culkin, and it gets crazier as it goes on. Beautiful.
  5. Heal The World — Performed this with a bunch of other kids on stage when I was in school. I remember trying to hold back tears then, and failing. It still happens to me. One of his most powerful songs.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS — Beat It, The Way You Make Me Feel, Remember The Time, Billie Jean and many, many more…

I always wondered, what if Johnnie Walker had MJ as brand ambassador? We’d probably have the tagline Keep Moonwalking…

Write to me and tell me which are YOUR favourite Michael Jackson songs! And did you like my little tribute to MJ? If so, tap the little green heart at the bottom!
