VidCon Debrief

I’d like to start by saying thank you by once again trying to be as open and transparent as possible with what has happened and the thought process. Many other organizations would not be as willing to do so, and it is definitely one of the reasons I respect the work you all do so much. I think you did a good job on the creator mob fiasco. There were some difficult situations, and hopefully now they will be more apparent to everyone and won’t be as much of an issue in the future.

As for the harassment issue, I fear it may set a bad precedent. You’ve made it clear that endangering people by forming mobs (even accidentally), will be dealt with. However, you have set the precedent that there are exceptions where verbal abuse will be acceptable. I understand there are extenuating circumstances where she felt threatened, and has been attacked by people for her views over the years. However, that’s irrelevant.

I could argue things like her position of power, their intimidation tactic of sitting in the front, and so on, but again it’s irrelevant. What it boils down to is you made an exception and now there can/will be other exceptions. After all when you think about someone complexly there is always, always a reason for there actions and it can be traced back to something good.

You didn’t have to ban her, or kick her from a panel, but there seems to be no repercussions, and that’s the issue. Even if it was something like a warning that a repeat offense would bar her from sitting on any panels again would be fine. I’m sure a lot of people would be upset that it’s not enough, but it would show that you’re willing to enforce your rules here, even with powerful figures like her.

To quote sir Terry Pratchett’s Thud, “No excuses. He’d promised himself that. No excuses. No excuses at all. Once you had a good excuse, you opened the door to bad excuses.”

So, thank you to the VidCon team and everyone involved. I appreciate that I can even be aware that all of this exists, and of at least the gist of what Hank said to her. I hope you don’t consider this an attack, because I do not mean it to be one. I know there’s a good chance you won’t see this comment, but I do really appreciate everything you do and am very grateful that you go out of your way to help build a better community, even if I don’t always agree with you.
