So what the hell is style?

The style is a branch of linguistics that studies the expressive possibilities of language and means of their lexical meaning, as well as their patterns of use in different writing situations and spheres of communication. The style can be divided into two disciplines: the lexical form and functional style. The lexical stylistics of expressive language means considering, the exact meaning of words and their connotations, lexical compatibility, the phenomenon of synonyms and antonyms, phraseology, etc. Functional style explores how language functions in different spheres of human activity, i.e., it analyzes the operational methods, their characteristics, and features of their use in various communicative situations. In this tutorial, we will focus on the functional style.

Once again, recall that the functional style is an individual system of using language tools and processes for their organization, accompanies one or the other kind of human activity and dependence in their essential characteristics. As I mentioned above, the functional style is divided into two types: the conversational style and book style. Traditionally, the book form consists of four styles: scientific, official business, journalistic and artistic. The main difference between the conversational style of all styles of the book one is that conversational style is a style of dialogue, casual style of speaking while book style is codified writing styles that are not used by us in everyday life. However, many researchers emphasize that the division of conditional forms. Most texts perform multiple functions and therefore different styles can be combined in them. Despite this, when writing a book, you should be very clear about exactly which style you are running and what style is appropriate based on your goals and your audience. The fact that the definition of “bad style” often means that the author of the selected writing style does not match the speech situation and the functions that the text should perform. For example, inappropriate use of book style in everyday language, just as inappropriate to write with the help of official-business, journalistic or literary texts, or to use a conversational style in the scientific writing. To help eliminate these mistakes, we shall understand the main features and characteristics of each of the functional forms.

Artistic style

The artistic style, as the name suggests, this is the style of fiction. All researchers note the particular complexity of the study and its characteristics. The fact that literature is extremely heterogeneous, plus, it can be used language means all other functional styles. Therefore, highlight some standard features inherent in all poetic texts is practically impossible. Perhaps the only thing that can interfere with certainty assert that art form; its primary function is the aesthetic impact. No matter what the precise means are not used in a particular text, they all work exactly on this feature.

The expressive means of artistic style

Firstly, considerable importance has the text form. Fiction has created the largest number of genres, each of which has its structure, its characteristics, and rules of construction. And in this case, form always carries a meaning. Secondly, in the artistic style actively operated by different types of vocabulary and the effects of their combination. Third, the art style has elevated emotionality and expressiveness through the use of various tropes. As in the case of genres, fiction has developed the most advanced system of metaphors. Fourth, the art style pays close attention to the effects of synonyms, antonyms, connotations, language games. Finally, in a literary text can be used completely different syntax — from extreme simplification to limit complications. Permissible so-called author’s punctuation, to the greatest extent transmitting the main idea.
