The Ramayan Katha
According to The Ramayan Katha, Ancient Ayodhya was a part of the Kosala Kingdom, which was ruled by King Dasharatha with his three beautiful wives Kausalya, Kaikeyi, and Sumitra. Kausalya was the eldest queen and gave birth to the eldest son of Dasharatha, Lord Rama. Kaikeyi gave birth to Bharat and Sumitra gave birth to Lakshman and Satrugna. All the four brothers were very close to each other and shared an undividable bond growing up. Now to mention according to early kingdom rules, the 1st born of the king is supposed to the be next ruler of the kingdom.
It is arguably said Kaikeyi used to love Rama more than her own son Bharat when Rama was a kid and thereby spent more time with him giving him motherly affection. Manthara, one of the most loyal and trusted servants of Kaikeyi didn’t like that. So, she plotted against Rama and thereby when all the Princes grew up and were ready for Rajyabhishek (Coronation), Manthara brainwashed Kaikeyi and made her believe that Coronation of Rama as the next king will be doomed for her blood son, Bharata, and thereby Manthara planted the seed of hatred and doubts into Kaikeyi’s heart.
Kaikeyi acted on it and made King Dasharatha oblige to make Bharat the king of Ayodhya and send his 1st born Rama to exile for fourteen years into the woods. Lakshman being the devoted inseparable brother, followed Rama & his wife, Sita, at the age of 18.
King Dasharatha passed away due to heartbreaking grief of sending his 1st born for exile, and Bharata ruled Ayodhya in absence of his brother Rama at Lord Ram’s will and insistence. This is where it all went down, because during this exile period Surpanakha, the demon sister of Ravana, got attracted to Lord Rama and has been documented that she attacked Sita (Ram’s wife), out of jealousy, and Lord Lakshman punished her by cutting her nose off.
In the act of Vengeance, the demon king of Lanka, Ravana abducted Sita and took her to Lanka forcing her constantly to sleep with him. Since Lord Rama was in exile, he couldn’t go back to Ayodhya before 14 years, so he took help of The Banara King (Monkey King) Sugriva and his Army to capture Sita back from Ravana’s clutch.
