I’d also mention saving maps locally on your phone — there’s nothing like arriving at your destination and discovering you need to download a few hundred megs of map data right off the bat.

Mirrorless cameras are nice for travelling too, offering quality that’s substantially better than a smartphone, but in a package that’s much more compact than a DSLR.

Also — should be ‘battery packs are super essential’ ;-)
