Man, 74, jailed for 10 years for rape

A 74-year-old man was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by the High Court in Suva yesterday for raping his granddaughter.

Between December 1, 2012 and January 31, 2013 the accused was being charged for having sexual relations with his four-year-old granddaughter in Vanuabalavu.

Justice Perera said the accused breached the trust the victim had on him and he exploited her vulnerability.

The age gap between the accused and the victim was 67 years.

His non-parole period is six years.

Eleven Years For Rape

A 26-year-old man was sentenced to 11 years, nine months and two weeks for the rape and the indecent assault of his 12-year-old sister.

Judge Justice Achala Wengapulli said: “Your sister thought you were going to tell her stories.

“On April 15, 2015 in Naitasiri you raped your sister inside an empty shop.”

There was an age gap of 13 years between his sister and him.

His non-parole period is six years.

The court has given him 30 days to appeal.

Student On Manslaughter Charge

A tertiary student charged with manslaughter appeared at the Suva High Court yesterday.

Judge Justice Salesi Temo has further remanded 21-year-old Sunil Chand.

The state was given time to file and serve information and disclosures while defence counsel Yunas Singh will be applying for bail.

It is alleged on July 19, Chand drove a truck in a manner which was reckless and caused serious harm to Dheron Govind Raju which resulted in his death.

The court has been adjourned to August 29 for mention.
