Volleyball has brought a lot of changes to the Kinoya community. This housing suburb outside Suva was once renowned for its criminal activities. This led to the formation of the Kinoya Volleyball Association with the intentions to bring the community together and help bring positive changes to the lives of the people there.

KVA secretary Joeli Dulaki said getting youths involved in sports is one of their plans to help them stay away from crime.

“We brought together the teams to represent the district and now we are happy to say that we are the champions of the 2016 Crest Chicken Easter Championship,” he said.

But the dreams don’t stop here, Dulaki says, this is just another step forward and the plan is to improve our play as we go in now as the defending champions.

“Volleyball is one of the popular sports played in the area. So we use the sport to advocate good sportsmanship and for young people to stay away from harmful substances.”

To commemorate on their Easter Championship win, the community got together and joined in a victory march around the suburb.

Dulaki said the support from former players had been tremendous during the championship as they passed on their knowledge of the game to the young players.
