I am no expert when it comes to foreign policy, but it’s not difficult to see that our actions in Syria aren’t working very well. Hence I am all for trying something different. Let’s say that, hypothetically, we try what you suggest — listening to Syrian civil society and doing what they deem necessary.

What happens then if it doesn’t work? Do we go back to doing whatever we want and return to disregarding Syrian civil society?
